What is Sled Island? Glad you asked.
It is an independent music and arts festival that started in 2007 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was founded by Zak Pashak, a local musician and promoter who wanted to create a festival that showcased diverse and emerging artists across multiple genres and disciplines1. The name Sled Island comes from a nickname for Calgary that refers to its location near the Rocky Mountains.
Since its inception, Sled Island has grown to become one of the most acclaimed and anticipated festivals in Canada, attracting over 40,000 attendees and featuring over 250 bands, comedians, filmmakers and artists each year. The festival also has a unique feature of inviting a guest curator every year to help shape the lineup and the tone of the event. Some of the past guest curators include Sudan Archives (2022), Julien Baker (2019), Deerhoof (2018), Flying Lotus (2017), Peaches (2016), Godspeed You! Black Emperor (2015), Kathleen Hanna (2014) and John Dwyer (2013).
Sled Island is more than just a music festival. It is also a celebration of Calgary’s vibrant arts and culture scene, as well as a platform for community engagement and social awareness. The festival collaborates with local venues, organizations, businesses and volunteers to create a diverse and inclusive experience for everyone involved.
